New Theme for 2010-2011 Momology the Art and Science of Mothering
In 2010, MOPS invites you to join in the learning process as together we explore Momology: The Art and Science of Mothering.
Mothering is both art and science. It combines all of who we are to shape healthy, resilient kids. Mothering is so complex it requires both sides of our brain – not to mention our hands and feet, eyes and ears, mouth and (sniff, sniff) unfortunately, sometimes even our noses!
There's the scientific side of mothering where we develop a hypothesis based on certain principles, test that hypothesis in real-time, consider the results and decide what parts worked and what parts didn't. We keep refining our hypotheses until we find what works for us.
Intertwined with the scientific, mothering requires an artistry that shades with our personality, colors with our unique gifts, and blends past and current experiences.
MOPS International has identified four essential elements for successful outcomes with our kids.
Core is about knowing and growing ourselves. Understanding and working with our unique temperament, experiences, and emotions in a way that develops resilience. Research clearly shows that a mom with a strong, resilient core is more likely to raise a child with a strong, resilient core.
Finesse is about honing practical mothering skills—intentionally carrying out our daily responsibilities in ways that encourage growth and resilience in our kids.
Circle is about building relationships with neighbors, care-givers, extended family and, most importantly, with our husbands or for single moms, with a parenting partner.
Grandscape is about engaging with God and his unique purpose for our lives. Both secular and Christian research identifies faith in God as an essential element for successful mothering.
Through Momology, as we explore together, we’ll be guided by an all-knowing, all-powerful, always-present God. Our theme verse for the year is:
Even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. (Psalm 139:10)
Anywhere we go, God sees, knows, and guides. So we can lead — and love — knowing God will get us through all the hard spots, all our decisions, all our roles, all our times we can’t hold open our eyelids and the times we’re bursting with joy. God’s hand guides us as we guide our children. As we study Momology together to become better moms making a better world.

Subject: Graceful Moms
Hi ladies! We have a few things going on right now.
We have a mom-to-be who is in Tampa w/ complications & she will be there the remainder of the pregnancy...3 months! Her husband is having to drive back & forth from Sebring so he can work. They have the necessities but asked if we could get them a gas card. They don't want money, just a gas card. He said that gas was really taking a toll on their finances. If you can donate $1, $5, anything, please let me know by the Wed the 19th, so we can help this husband continue to go see his wife in Tampa. I will come pick it up if I need to or you can drop it off at a central location & I'll pick it up there. Thanks in advance!
We are having our first Graceful Moms project! Saturday, May 22 from 1pm-3pm. We will be putting care bags together for the women at the safehouse. We are looking for donations of shampoo, conditioner, lotion, hand & foot cream, body spray, small picture frame or album, manicure/pedicure sets, anything really. These things do not have to be expensive, I will be going to the Dollar Tree to get some things next week. Please keep in mind, these women basically left their home, their life, the abuse w/ the things they could grab while the husband was gone. So anything to help these women know there is hope, to encourage them, show them that someome cares will be appreciated. Not to mention we will be helping the safehouse so they don't have to supply some of these things at least for a few days.
We are always taking donations & VOLUNTEERS! I really need more volunteers, mostly on call or some who can help me stop by the hospital or go get some baby items last minute. Know remember, if you are ASKED to go get baby items for a mom on the spur of the moment, you will be given money to do this.
As always, MOPS, please reply to the e-mail address below.
I appreciate everything you all do everyday! Thank you so much!

Toy and Clothing Swap Thursday May 13
Hey Ladies,.:)
I know this is short notice, but was wondering if anyone would be interested in bringing their gently used clothes and toys that they don't want any more for a MOPS Swap. We could do it first thing at MOPS on Thursday and hopefully it would be a great way to clean out our closets and get some new toys/clothes!
PLEASE let me know if you're interested so I can plan the meeting accordingly!
Thanks,
Betsy

MOPS tomorrow Ladies!!!:)
Hey Ladies!
Tomorrow we will have a guest speaker from the Sebring MOPS, Nancy Duvall. She is coming to tell us about a great opportunity to help other moms in need. She will tell us all about it, but in the mean time, she told me that the Woman's Shelter is in need of crib and twin bed sheets. I thought I would pass it along just in case you had any extras! And of course if you have any other new or used baby items that you'd like to donate, please bring them tomorrow!!!
See you then!!

5 Ways to Create Happy Risers
I had a hard time getting up this morning ... and my kids did too! Seems like once we get used to the time change, something upsets it again. Here are some tips on how to wake your kids up happy - every day!
5 Ways to Create Happy Risers
by Tracey Brewer
Mornings can be a struggle when it comes to getting everyone up and moving. Having my children actually display a cheerful attitude while getting ready for the day sometimes seems like an unattainable bonus! Here are five ways I’ve found to create a happy riser.
1.Turn on some music. Hearing a song that he enjoys may help ease your child’s transition from sleeping to waking. You could try a recording of children’s songs, soft instrumental music or even something classical.
2. Be silly. Now, I have one daughter who really enjoys this; the other one, not so much. I might sing her a silly song, tickle her, toss her blanket over her and pretend I can’t see her – anything out of the ordinary that will make her laugh.
3. Leave a note or a small treat under their pillow. This could be a once a week or so surprise – no need to do it only at tooth fairy times! A little “I love you” or “You’re special” note along with a pencil, sheet of stickers or even a small piece of candy to be eaten after breakfast can make a routine morning special.
4. Allow enough time for awakening gently. I know when I’m running late and come dashing into their bedroom, hurrying everyone along, it doesn’t make for a peaceful start to the day. It’s much better if I have a minute to sit with them and let them begin their day at a more leisurely pace.
5. Have your children in bed on time the night before. Okay, did you see this one coming? It’s much easier to get out of bed happy if you’ve had a full night of sleep. I feel like I’m such a stickler when it comes to getting my kids in bed on time, but I know how things will go the next day if they don’t get enough sleep.
I hope that you will find some of these ideas to be useful in changing those grumpy faces into smiling ones!

To begin, the two players will practice throwing and catching a large ball. Instruct your student to throw the ball underhand to his partner. His partner will then throw the ball back to him in the same fashion. Have the players continue throwing and catching for several minutes.
Next, the players will practice throwing and catching a tennis ball. Using a smaller ball will increase the challenge of this activity. Instruct your student to throw the ball underhand to his partner. His partner will then throw the ball back to him in the same fashion. Make sure that your student is comfortable with both throwing and catching the tennis ball before moving on to the next activity.
Each player needs a large spoon, and each group of two players needs a ping-pong ball. One of the players starts with the ping-pong ball balanced on his spoon. He then tosses it to the other player, who in turn catches the ping-pong ball on his spoon. The object of this game is to pass the ball back and forth without dropping it off the spoons.
Thank you Katie for passing a long this game.

You can either send funds directly to World Witness, (make check payable to World Witness) One Cleveland St, Greenville, SC. 29601-3696 and earmark it Haiti relief, (WW will in turn send it to Lumiere Medical Ministries) or you can give directly to the church and earmark it Haiti Relief. Another way to help with Haiti relief is through the Haitian First Baptist Church, from Avon Park. This church is collecting donated items and will be sending it to Haiti via a cargo ship. The items that they are asking for are non-perishable foods, water, sanitary items for women, shoes or sandles, blankets, rice or flour.
